Japan Scrambles Fighter Jets - Japan repelled jets after the Russian and Chinese warplanes approached its airspace on Tuesday (May 24), when Tokyo welcomed leaders of the Quad group of nations that includes the United States, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said.
Tokyo has expressed "significant concern" to both Russia and China through diplomatic channels, Kishi said in a news conference broadcast online.

Japan Says It Scrambled Jets To Intercept A Russian A 50 Radar Plane
Leaders of the "Quad" group pledged on May 24 to work together for a free and open Indo-Pacific region and fight climate change, as they gathered for talks aimed at confronting an increasingly China assertive
"We think that the fact that this action was taken at the Quad meeting makes it more provocative than before," he said, adding that it was the fourth such incident since November.
Two Chinese fighter jets flew over the Sea of Japan from the East China Sea and were later joined by two Russian fighter jets to fly together to the East China Sea, Kishi said.
The two Chinese fighter jets were later replaced by another pair believed to be Chinese, which then flew with the Russians on a long flight to the Pacific, he said.

A Russian spy plane also crossed the sea from the northern island of Hokkaido to the Noto Peninsula on Japan's main island, he said.
Russia and China have both confirmed that they carried out a joint patrol. The Russian Defense Ministry said the patrol lasted 13 hours over Japan and the East China Sea.
Separately, South Korea's military said it scrambled fighter jets after at least four Chinese and four Russian fighter jets entered its air defense zone on Tuesday.
It was not immediately clear if the two events were related or if any of the same hunts were involved.

Japan has announced it has scrambled fighter jets in response to what Tokyo called a "provocation" by Russian and Chinese aircraft near its airspace.
The news comes as the country hosts a meeting of world leaders for the first informal meeting of the Quadrilateral Nations: Japan, the United States, Australia and India.

Japan's Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi announced the news at a virtual press conference, saying the operation was planned to take place alongside the meeting.
Kishi said he expressed "deep concern" about the aircraft approaching Japanese airspace, adding that at least two Chinese bombers had joined two Russian bombers in the Sea of Japan and had "converged the flights to the East China Sea."
"After that, a total of four aircraft, two expected new Chinese bombers - to replace the two Chinese bombers, and two Russian bombers, will fly a joint flight from the East China Sea to the Pacific," the defense minister he added as mentioned. Independent.co.uk.
The exercise was later confirmed by Moscow, which said the planes carried out a joint surveillance exercise in the area on Tuesday.

South Korea's military also announced it scrambled fighter jets after what it believed to be the same Chinese and Russian fighter jets entered its air defense zone on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the plane entered and left the Korean Air Defense Zone (Korea ADIZ) several times during the day.
ADIZ is different from airspace. It is an area where countries can ask foreign aircraft to identify. There is no international law under the ADIZ.
Moscow has previously said it does not recognize the ADIZ in Korea. Beijing also stated that since the area is not connected by land, all countries should be given the opportunity to enjoy freedom of movement there.
